Fighting Back

I have depression and even though I don't want to, I take my medication every day and every day I get out of bed and get dressed and do what I have to do. It' hard sometimes to do anything, but I do it. If my family can see me fighting this, and not giving up, then the world is a little better.

Every week I work in the food kitchen with my daughters. Its a small thing. But it helps and I am telling my girls something about the world and what they can do.

I call my parents every week. There isn't much happpening in their lives. It's weird, my life is moving so fast. I guess their lives went fast once too. But it makes them so happy to have me call.

My momma always taught me to say "please" and "thank you." What's the harm in that? Sometimes I think I'm talking another language, but I do it anyway. And my kids and grandkids do the same. Nothing wrong with being polite.

I try to donate to local non-profits when I can. Many non-profits do amazing work for local communities- tutoring our kids, providing free events, providing housing to homeless people, and working for important social issues. I don't know how far the money goes, but I know that I am sending a message to the employees by letting them know that I support them.

It doesn’t matter in what sort of hurry I am, I always hold the door open for the person behind me. I almost feel bad when I don’t do it- and when someone does it for me it makes me smile. It’s a small thing but I feel that little acts of kindness like that really do “pay it forward”.

When I was 10 years old, I got in a car accident. I immediately started crying when we got out of the car. I knew my day wasn't going to get better, but then a lady came over and comforted me and made my whole day turn around. Just to know that even though she didn't know me, she knew how it felt and she helped me get through it.

Red Light

Once, when I was young, I lost someone I loved. I was crying as usual at a stop light. My face looked like a red tomato. I was so sad and felt and looked hideous. I looked at the car next to mine. There was a man in the passenger seat and he looked right at me and mouthed, "YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL." It shocked me and made me smile, actually made me laugh. I really looked bad. But his eyes were kind, like he meant it. I thought about it for weeks. It really helped me, that one moment. I never forgot that small kind act.

Our Town

In 6th Grade I read the play, Our Town by Thornton Wilder. We had to write a paper and I chose to base it off the quote, “You’ve got to love life to live and live life to love life.” At 12 it challenged me to think about what I would miss in life if it were suddenly taken away. I realized that to love life you should cherish the little things usually brought to you by the people you love, places you treasure- whether it is your dad’s laugh or the lotion your step-mom uses, the smell of a storm by the ocean, the sounds of the city, the touch of a blanket that is wrapped around you and your sister while watching a favorite movie- all these little things are what make up our love for life.

Today, I decided to start this blog, so that we, our community, locally, nationally, globally, could join together and share success stories and dreams we have for changing our world.

This blog is not about political party, but about unity, about us what brings us together, not tears us apart. What I am look forward to sharing is positive changes we all are making and can be making as we live our daily lives. My goal is to inspire, support and encourage each other as we bring us all a bit closer and make the world a little bit brighter. One small change at a time.
